Lyrics
IF I NEVER
Words and Music by James Keith Norman
VERSE #1:
He sits right beside her on the porch. And they don’t talk,
as her family packs up the SUV.
They’re 12 years old, and oh, they ache,
knowing how far this move will be.
Her father calls out, “Time to go, sweetheart.”
And she whispers to the boy, as they part:
CHORUS:
“If I never come back here again,
if I never find the way,
please remember how much I love you today.
If I never come back.”
VERSE #2:
And on an army base, a soldier and his wife,
they hug and they kiss desperately.
They know they have little time
’cause soon he’ll fly overseas.
At last he says, “It’s time to go, sweetheart.”
And then he whispers to her, as they part:
CHORUS:
“If I never come back here again,
if I never find the way,
please remember how much I love you today.
If I never come back.”
BRIDGE:
Life races on
What’s here is gone
so fast we should take time to reveal
each day to those we love
how we feel.
VERSE #3:
He is 82, and she is 81.
They’ve lived together most of their days.
Lately, she’s not been too well
and with her all the time, he stays.
Whenever he says, “It’s time to sleep, sweetheart,”
she whispers to him, just in case they part:
CHORUS:
“If I never come back here again,
if I never find the way,
please remember how much I love you today.
If I never come back.”
